Steel's Obsession for Historical Details Makes This One Worth Reading
rating: 3

I read this book for the first time the day it went on sale back in 1987, and while I found it mildly disappointing, Steel's obsession with the details, a fictional story weaved with true details of historical events (the murder of the Russian Tsar's family, the revolution that followed) kept me reading until the very last page.

typical steel book
rating: 3

It's a good read, but very predictable especially if you've read a couple of danielle steel's books before. The Russian dynasty storyline was pretty interesting though. It actually inspired me to do some research on the Romanovs, which I knew little about initially. Based in both WWI and WWII, which is a time period I like to read about. Typical riches-to-rags-to-riches story.

Heartwrenching
rating: 5

Wonderfully written!
I have never been as emotional with any book as I was with this one. I felt the pain that Zoya felt all through my entire body. And her happiness made my heart flutter!
This is a wonderful story, a little too much tragedy and heartache for my taste, but nevertheless, I could not put this book down. It was my first Danielle Steel book, and it had such an impact on me, that I have yet to read another one of her books. Not because I don't like her or her style, but because the story felt so real, that I need time to get over the heartache and tragedy.
I admire Zoya and her strength, you fall in love with her family and her friends, and her husbands. After reading this story, you feel like you can face anything.
You will not be disappointed with this book. Read it!!

Delightful reading
rating: 4

If you enjoy escaping from harsh reality to a world of happy endings, this is a perfect reading for the beach or for a lazy afternoon. The heroine's breeding and class will make you want to curtsy next time you're introduced and her amazing story is filled with beautiful images of happiness and success. Easy flowing and engaging romance.

First and Favorite

This was the first Danielle Steele book I ever read. I loved it. I loved reading the journey. Very descriptive without wasting the readers time. Very informative, Danielle did her homework! A very rich, entertaining set of story lines and characters. ♥

Of all the Danielle Steele books, this is still my favorite.
