The Rough Guide series of CD's serve as excellent introductions to the musics of so may different and disparate cultures. If there is a corner of the globe with a musical heritage, chances are there is an expertly-compiled Rough Guide to serve as your curator and tour guide.
For example: Indonesia. It has been an international crossroads for centuries -- millenia even -- influenced by countless travelers passing through the Straits of Malacca or the Java Sea. I'm not a musical historian, so I don't know if the Chinese, Indian and East African elements of the "Indonesian sound" are the result of Indonesia influencing others, or being influenced by, or some combination thereof. It doesn't matter! The sound is both comfortable and exotic.
Two tracks stand out. Track 1, the downbeat instrumental "Sambasunda" by CBMW, sets the right opening tone. But the disc peaks at Track 9, "Sumbawa," contributed by former Three Mustaphas Three member Sabah Habas Mustapha. He stopped aping Balkan music and has become a respected figure in the SE Asian music scene. This track is an upbeat, catchy dance tune that nicely balances West East North and South. A Balkan-loving Brit doing Indonesian pop? World music indeed!
