I jumped into Ni Hao 3 without going through 1 and 2 so there was definitely a transition period for me. Speaking as an owner of the Ni Hao 3 and Ni Hao 4 materials, I would recommend this for serious learners. This book is divided into 8 lessons with topics such as activities, transportation, being sick, traveling and others. Each chapter has a dialog, grammar patterns and a new word glossary. One strong feature of this course is the companion computer CD. They do a good job with the CD. It doesn't have fancy graphics but that's not the point, is it? I also have the workbook and audio CDs. If you get all this, the course is expensive but remember you are spending a lot of time in this endeavor and you need to have good materials that progress as you do. An alternative series would be the Integrated Chinese coursework but not having studied that I cannot give a comparison. One aspect that some adult learners may not like is that the dialogs and life situations that are used are geared toward high school students. From my viewpoint, this was OK. One slight negative for me is that some characters have the pinyin over the character. At this level, the student should be trying to use the Chinese characters and, for the English-speaking person, putting any pinyin on the dialog page tends to inhibit character learning. In summary, the Ni Hao books are a course which will take you from beginning to upper-intermediate. This is important when selecting course materials. Don't choose a beginning book which does not have a progression path after you finish it.
