Fighter Squadron

Fighter Squadron puts players in the cockpits of several World War II planes to help fight a virtual battle for the skies. All the usual suspects are included, such as the American P-51 Mustang, the German FW-190, and the British Spitfire, but Fighter Squadron also lets players pilot bombers--something few World War II flight simulators do. You can hop between crew positions while in flight, so you can guide the plane to its target as pilot, drop your bombs as the bombardier, or fend off enemy fighters as a gunner. It's also possible to switch control to any plane during a mission, so if things are getting a little hairy in your Lancaster bomber you can immediately jump into a nearby fighter to clear the air of marauding fighters.

Fighter Squadron was supposed to have the most accurate flight physics and damage model ever produced, but the released version stalled far short of that lofty goal. If you haven't the patience to download and apply software patches from the Web, this fledgling sim just won't soar. But once the patches are installed, Fighter Squadron shapes up to become one of the premier WWII flight simulators--especially for multiplayer dogfights. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Plenty of planes, including bombers
  • Ability to switch to any plane in the air means players are always in the thick of the action
  • Fun online multiplayer dogfighting
Cons:
  • Needs some serious patching to correct flaws in the physics model
  • Player can't see far enough into the horizon without tweaking some advanced options

Manufacturer: ACTIVISION

Price: $19.95

User Reviews
FS:SDOE - The sim that wouldnt die.
rating: 5

Panned by critics from the beginning (I believe I read one good review). Six years after its release in 1999 this sim still has a solid following. Parsoft has allowed controlled access to the code, so the sim with the patch only loosly resembles the original. People who bought it and put it down originally are always amazed at what has been done with this versitile software.

Add ons include over 45 WWI planes, 150 WWII planes, Many of Germanys "Secret Weapons" planes and more!

In 50+ years, I have never had a better return on my entertainment dollar.

Bomber Squad, Too!

I just wanted to say, you can fly bombers.

Not Good
rating: 1

Don't waste your money on this game. European airwar is by far a more realistic game. The cockpits are not accurate and the is game is hard to play. The prop is way to small and looks stupid. The terrain looks good, but the gunnary looks stupid. This is one of the worste flight sims I have seen.

MOST EXCELLENT

This is one of the BEST Flight Sims in my collection. I enjoy being able to design my own planes and the SDOE community is most helpful with any questions. I give it a 3 thumbs up !

so much promised
rating: 3

I first found this sim on these pages, after reading the reviews I decided to purchase the program and eagerly awaited its arrival. It's been downhill eversince. I could not get the targeting to work and the toggle views were not fast enough for me to catch a glimpse of say an Me 262. I have tried a number of times to get activision to tell me what I needed to make this work , I own a new computer and I have enough memory and speed,it has been one month since I started to contact activision and their response so far is to download a driver that I already have. Now they suggest a new voodoo 3 but dont specify which voodoo 3 series. I am truly disapointed in the program and am sorry I purchased it.
