This disc is a real sleeper. It goes without saying that the Israel Philharmonic knows its Mahler--they've played him under all the great conductors--and Zubin Mehta's Mahlerian credentials are also pretty strong. His earlier recording of this symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic was first rate, and similarly underrated. It may be that Mehta lacks the self-conscious profundity that we've come to expect in today's Mahler conductors--the gravity (and tedium) cultivated by Bernard Haitink or Claudio Abbado, for instance. What we have instead is one hell of an exciting performance of Mahler's Second Symphony, captured in spectacular sound. And that's certainly good enough for me. --David Hurwitz Manufacturer: Teldec

| User Reviews | | I must be missing the point rating: 3
I seem to be the only one here that does not like this recording.
I don't have anything against Mehta (his recording of the First with the Israel Philharmonic is quite good). But this album seems to be "phoned in" both in terms of emotional impact and sound quality.
If you want to hear an emotional Second, try Blomstedt or Kaplan.
If you really want to hear what Mahler can sound like on DVD Audio, try the recording of Rattle conducting the Fifth.

Incredible Recording rating: 5
Mahler's Second Symphony is probably the greatest symphony composed in the 20th Century. This performance is both dynamic and thouthtful. I have a copy of Oskar Fried's 1924 recording and this one approaches Fried's performance. Fried was a contemporary of Mahler and Mahler said of one of Fried's earlier performances that Mahler himself could not have done a better job.
The sonic quality of the DVD is impeccable. Since DVD audio seems to be dying, this disk may be the best we will ever have to demonstrate the audio capabilities of our system.

A Special Experience rating: 5
If you are looking for one of the "special" DVD-A's that just blow you away with superlative technical and artistic qualities, then look no further. It doesn't matter if you are a big Mahler fan--if you like dramatic classical music, then you will love this.

My favorite DVD-AUDIO rating: 5
I own a handful of dvd-audio orchestral performances. This is my favorite one by far. They all have great sound, but this one seems alive. I must admit, that I am not well-versed in this genre of music, but I know when I like it. When I go to an occasional concert and read the program notes for a piece, I usually am left thinking, 'huh?' So you should be aware that I can't give any sort of valuable critique on whether this is a good performance of the Resurrection... but I can tell you that I love it. I've listened to this one frequently, while I've never finished some of my others. I put it on again the other day, which has prompted me to write this review.

Could Be Great rating: 3
I agree with most of the reviews posted. Let me warn DVD -A lovers though. Tracks 1-5 play just fine. The subsequent tracks, though, cause my player big problems. I have to hit fast forward for a few seconds to get the player to play the tracks. This is the only DVD A that has had this problem so I have to think it's something that is wrong with the digital transfer rather than my player. Be warned. Otherwise very satisfying.
