What record exec thought this picture would make a great cover for a Smiths best of? What this creepy, ugly, middle aged man has to do with The Smiths is anyone's guess. The songs are louder then other Smiths cd's but the remastering job isn't faithful to the original sound of the albums. Purchase the similar "Singles" with the gorgeous Diana Dors cover instead if your looking for just the hits but you really should buy the albums.

Best Smiths compilation to date!

I am surprised to see so many comments on this release that are not on the positive side. This is the best compilation of the Smiths out there, plain and simple. It covers all of the classics and the remastering on it sounds fantastic! Way better than the 2 best of CDs out there now.
I heard this CD was not authorized by the band, but even if that is the case, the sound quality is too good to pass up. Why haven't they given the same treatment to all their releases I will never know!?

Iconic 80's group; iconic music

I didn't listen much to The Smiths when their music was being produced; I was too steeped in techno-pop to pay much attention to guitar-based bands. Of course, I couldn't help but hear some of these songs, and they always stuck in my head, nagging lyrics that clawed at me in ways I would rather not have thought about.
This is dark music. I just finished writing a review of the Gold collection of Abba, and I can't imagine a more stark contrast in popular music. Where Abba is happy and cute, The Smiths are lurking in subway tunnels and shadowy alleys that sunlight doesn't reach often--and doesn't stay.
And here, on one CD, is a whole bunch of songs like that. I guess the trick is to listen to the entire thing without wanting to jump in front of a train or something, but once you get past that, the songs take on a life of their own.
Alienation is always an important topic; it's a way of life on this CD. If that sounds bad...well, I don't really mean it that way. I've given this CD 5 stars, and that's no accident. The Smiths were a great band.
Some songs are simply immortal; "How Soon Is Now?" and "This Charming Man" to name but two. I can't imagine an American band writing this kind of stuff, and I can't imagine an American record company not throwing it in the trash, which would have been a real shame.
Listen to these songs, compare them to current songs on the radio, and despair.

The definitive best of Smiths collection.

I know the story behind this release and all the crap it got from the actual members of the band. This release was not authorized or approved by the band and I believe it's actually out of print. Anyway onto the music itself. Despite what critics and elitists say this is definitely the one "Best Of..." collection from The Smiths that you should get. It has every track from the 'Singles' compilation plus 5 more to boot. It also contains a much much more interesting booklet inside with actual lyrics and pictures of their discography along with track titles from those respective releases.
For a big Smiths fan like myself I have every album and rarities there is to find. But whenever I want to carry one cd in the car with me or for travel I carry this one. It has all the most recognizeable songs on it and I'm happy with that. Now for anyone who hasn't heard of The Smiths and wants to get into them this is a great introduction to the band and the one to get before you become a convert. The only gripe I have is the album cover, it's almost a bad imitation of a Smiths cover but once you hear the music and check out the booklet you forget that. Don't listen to negative reviews or press. An absolute must buy.

This charming band.

A long story short: this is easily the greatest Smiths collection out there. Better than "Best Of Volumes 1 & 2" and "Singles". In fact this includes EVERY track from "Singles", plus 5 more, and is remastered, AND has a better booklet. The only other single disc of theirs that comes close is "Louder Than Bombs" at 24 tracks, but that's missing many of the hits. Sure I could add another 10 songs easy, like "The Headmaster Ritual", "Half A Person", or "Cemetry Gates", but this would have to be two discs for that. Overall this does miss some favorites, but it's still the best choice for your first or only Smiths disc. Hey, get it used.
