Contrary to the FUD spread by Chris Veronica. These speakers last well beyond 8 months of use, maybe in a scenario of total abuse they only make it in 8 months but I've been using my system since 2002 with no problems outside of obvious wear on the fabric for the speakers.
Proper care should be taken to breaking these in, they do behave quite well when you give them around 20-30 hours of mild break in time, this means you're rarely ever leaving the first bar on the remote, playing through a variety of sounds enables the drivers to break in properly and deliver a really great experience.
For me the speakers have an amazing tonal quality to them for something that came in around $140 as a pack. It didn't pack an 8" driver and a hot amp but it did offer a solid cabinet and dual drivers in the sub box as well as standard wiring for the speakers instead of a mess with RCA plugs and suffering to be able to extend them.
Overall the 641's did well, they take and process 4 channel audio fine and filter for low frequency in the sub as there is no dedicated 0.1 port on the package. (Some try to use the front input on the sub but it's not an actual input area for center / sub. For quality 4 speaker output with general music using the stereo x2 option works fine and repeats the audio source to the rear satellites to avoid coloring to the audio itself.
Personally I think the set is great, if ever I hit a point where my drivers rip, there are pleanty of newer models to upgrade the current speakers (the MX5021 sub would go nicely in it imo)

I'm probably wasting my time by giving yet another positive reply, but MY GOD these speakers are great. All these people saying they've never heard a better sounding speaker are absolutely correct.
I've had my set for about 2 years without a single problem. They sound amazing.
Altec Lansing has decided to stop manufacturing the speakers, however. It's really a pitty and I truly hope they bring them back. I'm willing and anxious to buy a second set, despite my first set working perfectly (just as a backup, you know?).

I bought these just looking for a speaker system for my desktop at a reasonable price with decent power. I was a little disappointed by the size of the speakers. That is.. until i turned them on. The highs and the lows on this system is incredible. The mids definitely need some work but are worth every single penny. I've had my system for more than 3 years and its still running great. Just don't overdo it and take care of em.. remember.. these are computer speakers.. not a sound system. overall-great price, great deal, awesome quality.

Incredible sound from a small package

I saw those other sexy little Altec Lansing speakers in the store, but they really sounded poor. I also listened to these and was sold. The sound on this system is unbelievable - comparable with any decent stereo speaker set, great low end base, high end tweeter, and they have mid range cones in them to cover the in between. I still don't get the remote, at least make it wireless, I would rather just not have a remote. Anyway, music and sound from DVDs comes out fantastic, just as good as my stereo. It looses one star because of the subwoofer problem that I know of, and the annoying pop if the speakers are not turned on in the proper order. I still consider these about the best multimedia speakers you can buy.

Sounds like Heaven

Great Set, very Hefty and Heavy, but worth every pound. After using them almost continuosly for 2 years, the sub died on me. If I unplug it for a while, the woofer comes back, but after a few minutes it dies gain. Satelite speakers are in excellent condition, I always take care of my stuff and I am really sad to have to get a new set. This 641 has the most exquisite sound I have ever heard from a speaker set ever. I would recommend this above any other set, but if you do get them, please unplug or manually power off from the rear of the sub, and not only from the corded remote. I hope AL comes back with a set that compares or beats this one, not like the crappy ones they have in the market now.
