DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER! It will die in 3 years. I called Canon tech support and we went through a series of checks. Turns out it is an internal problem with the only one option which is to take it to a repair center and pay $100.00 or more dollars for the repair. The stupid printer cost $100.00.

Three years of use is not enough!

beware of faulty print heads

I had fine service from this multi funtion unit for quite a while ,years maybe I'm not sure .But when the copier started to print badly thats when my problems started.
I cleaned the print heads numerous times to no avail so I took the unit in for service. They said it needed cleaned (the print head) and that they had a special way of cleaning that was much superior to what I had done.
so be it.
2 weeks and 40.00 later I got it back .
Worked great...
for about a month or 2..
Same problem happened.
Took it back, they said it had a bad print head
since the cleaning hadnt worked...
and that it would be another 40.00 plus labor for a new print head.
So I did it.
2 weeks later got it back woorked great..Then in about
,.. no ,in exactly 3 months later
Same problem...
I called the canon service and they
said to me I probley needed a purger replaced that suplies ink to the print heads.I asked them how much that would cost and they said about
100.oo .
I said I could probley buy a new printer with the money I've put into this one, and they said I was probley right.

They also said the reason print heads fail is be cause I didnt use the printer often enough !!!
I needed to use it every day for it to work properly.

So beware in using this machine
( you must print every day )
or the print heads will act up.

... hey be sure to take your printer on vacation with you!

Died almost 3 years to the day...

I purchased mine in December 2004 and here it is 12/07/2007 and it just died. Mine started making the terrible grinding noise that most people hear and then the ink tanks just quit sliding back and forth. I have read about this in other sites on the web and it seems like a common problem. I liked the printer and scanner but for a printer to die after the light use I put it throuh is terrible.

Blank Page Printer Problems

I posted a printer problem fix on fixyourownprinter.com and am reprinting it below. I have owned a Multipass 3000 and now have the mp390. I have used the printer for several years and when it is printing it works just great. But there seems to be a chronic problem with the print head (black) clogging up. Here is my post. Try this in lieu of purchasing a new print head.

I have an MP390 Canon Multipass printer. I have fixed my print problems so many times I thought I'd post here even though I don't see anymore references to my printer (now very old).

I have problems about every six months with the black not printing. This is because the print head is clogged with dried ink (probably due to buying cheap ink).

I fix this by removing the print head and removing the black cartridge. I then go to the sink and run very hot water directly into the cavity for the black cartridge. This softens up the dried ink. Then i reinsert the black cartridge, and holding it over the sink, blow as hard as I can into the little vent hole on top of the cartridge. If you can manage to have a flood of ink come out of the bottom, then you are fixed.

I believe this would work on any ink cartridge that has the vent hole on top of the cartridge, and particularly where either the printer has not been used often, or if cheap ink is used that causes the ink to dry up or become congealed in the print head.

A couple of years ago I discovered my solution on-line. At that time the MP390 Multipass was fairly new but multiple people had the same problem. All of the stuff about using distilled water, alcohol, compressed air and so forth is unnecessary. I have fixed my print head about 4 times with nothing but hot water, with no resulting damage to either the print head or the printer.

Remember you have to put the ink cartridge back in to create a proper seal, and blow through the vent hole. Attempts to force air directly through the print head ink opening will probably not work because the larger opening will not be sealed.

Finally this solution may not pertain to you as I am not familiar with the MP730. But it may help someone else.

I bought this printer and I loved it but it didn't last long. Not even two years. The part I would have needed was more thatn a new printer and when I went online there were more people that had the same problem. Canon claimed they had not heard about this problem before when I emailed them.
