| User Reviews | | Not worth it...... rating: 1
I purchased a used set of these on ebay about three months ago and have regretted the decision. Yes, the system hisses constantly, even with the volume turned all the way down. while the hissing is barely noticible when you are using the system, it is really annoying in any quiet moments.
Asside from that, these speakers are not well suited for music. The mid range frequency responce is almost non-existent. It really kills the sound of great recordings (like the Sgt. Pepper's album by the Beatles). Additionally, the bass responce from the sub is very inarticulate.
If you can live with the constant hissing (and who can?) and you just want a speaker system for use with games, I would still recomend going with something better. I don't think that these are worth much more than you would pay for a cheap 2.0 speaker set.

NOT GOOD! rating: 1
Sorry to say, this system is not up to Altec Lansing quality. It DOES hiss... even when the power switch is turned OFF!! Altec Lansing blames it on my house wiring being 60hz. DUH... all house wiring in the USA is 60hz, and nothing else buzzes or hisses!
Anybody recommend a fairly descent 2.1 speaker system? Not looking for great sound at this price, but sheesh, it shouldn't make noise even when turned off!

Great Speakers for the money rating: 4
I bought these speakers for my boyfriend. My daughter has a set of Altec Lansings and she highly recommended them. They really pack a punch! My boyfriend hooked them up and they sound like a very expensive or high end set of speakers. We have yard parties all the time in the summer and he was adjusting the level to see how far he could raise the level without blaring out all the neighbors and all he could turn them up was about 1/4 notch!!
For anyone with a tight pocketbook....these speakers ROCK!!

Distortion, pics up any ambient electrical noise rating: 2
My biggest complaint about this is the distortion in the satellite speakers. I did a frequency sweep and the little speakers are basically expected to produce all but the very lowest freuencies. So there is distortion.
It picks up all kinds of electrical noise including my cell phone (digital noise).
The bass can boom but this might be speaker placement. There is some hiss. The volume knob clicks on and off but the unit doesn't ever go off.
It's not an idle threat, I will never buy Altec Lansing again. I thought they were a good brand. Whoever designed this should be pistol-whipped.

Don't buy! rating: 1
When I got these and installed them I felt like I just finished installing my home theater system! There are so many wires to this 2.1 system! Unnecessary! Plus, the speakers hiss when nothing is playing, even when they're turned off! Altec Lansing generally have good products but I don't know where they went wrong with this one.
