User Reviews
The best of a bad bunch
rating: 3

I'm writing this "postmortem" review as a means of helping others who might find themselves in my situation. Reasonably priced laser AIO's are an elusive holy grail. The ones much under $300 can be flimsy and suitable for only lighter use. The over $300 category are more solid and versatile, but have fatal design flaws that can make you regret putting such a sum at risk for what can be an unsuitable return. The MFC 8440 falls into the latter category.

I had the MFC 8440 for 2 years and 9 months, but I used only 44% of the unit's original drum life. It worked perfectly for my purposes, although the scan feature is inferior and it does not interface well with Windows XP or Vista. Still, if you don't rely heavily on scanning you can maneuver around the OS difficulties without any significant loss of functionality and be very satisfied.

The fatal design flaw of this and many of the other Brother machines is that the fusers blow and replacements cost upwards of $175. I found this out only after taking the machine to a repair shop where I was told it can happen after a month or a more reasonable amount of time.

Brother by far and away makes the best AIO lasers on the market, and they have the most reasonable consumable costs. And in our disposable world where nothing lasts forever I guess I can't complain about nearly 3 years of service. But I would be very reluctant to pay too much for a new version of this machine or a later incarnation of this model (DCP 8060, MFC 8860/65/70).

I would be cautious buying used MFC 8440's. Because they have no warranty I would try to insure that they had a long drum life remaining, indicating that they have likely received only the lightest use. This is not a knock on any reseller, many of whom offer suitable buying experiences. But no one can predict when the dreaded "fuser failure" will occur, essentially wiping out your investment.

It made it 1.5 years... So long...
rating: 2

Well,we had liked this product for the 1.5 years that it worked.... We are sending it back under the replacement warranty that we purchased. It now sounds like an old vehicle clunking down the road. It was used relatively lightly for printing and fax in our small office.

Great multi-function machine

We liked this one so well we purchased another one for our home office.

Great Replacement for B&W Laser Printer and Scanner
rating: 5

It is a great replacement for black and white laser printer and flat bed scanner to save space for office or home office use. I was looking for similar product that does scanning legal size paper, and Brother MFC-8440 does it all. It scans in color or b&w any paper size upto legal size either on flat bed or paper feeder. Perfect for small office or home office.

Great functionality & reliability
rating: 4

Excellent product, well worth the money! The Cons I've listed are in fact just minor irritations to me, but are certainly worth consideration to anyone purchasing this product.

Pros:
* Faxing quality is fast and clear.
* Scanner quality is very good. Document scanning is fast with great clarity.
* Copy quality is impressive. Documents are almost as good as the original, and with the document feeder you can just walk away and come back when the job is complete.

Cons:
* I've hooked up my answering machine through the MFC. Due to it's answering every call to check for a fax, it defeats the caller-ID function of the telephone to which it has been connected.
* Power sucker! This thing uses alot of power to do it's job. So whenever I send a print-job to the MFC, the lights dim momentarily. Also, it draws too much power to be connected through my 1500-Watt UPS.
* Printed/copied documents come out in the recessed bay, which can be irritating trying to fish out smaller paper sizes.
