I gave this 4 stars because the first unit I received was defective. The number 1 mic input was noisy.
The second unit worked like a charm. It looks good. It was a breeze to setup on my macbook pro.
Macs have the drivers built in so no additional software is necessary. I use it with two audio technica mics and it works fine. You can use it with Audacity, GarageBand and my fav Wiretap Studio. It will work with any recording software. You can plug an instrument like a guitar or bass directly into the # 2 input which has a low/high impedence switch. Firewire gives virtually no latency through the head phone jacks. M-Audio and Edirol (Roland) dominate this nitch. If you use a mac use the firewire interface if you use a PC use the USB 2 interface which is another product altogether. I have not seen a product under 500 dollars that will use both USB 2.0 and firewire. The Eiderol USB 2.0 product costs almost one hundred dollars more.
