I am looking for a friend a printer and decided to offer a review of the HP DESKJET 6540 that I have been using for the last 3 years. First the printer is made of aluminum and does not feel cheap in any way. Second, the printer's paper fill point and as well the exit point of the finished print being in front and below rather than out the top like so many other printers is enough to cause one to purchase this printer in itself. Thirdly, when it came time to REFILL the ink cartridges it was a simple matter of obtaining a refill kit for $10.00 and there has been no other complications. I have refilled about 4 times with no problems and still have more refill ink to use for future refills. Fourthly, the price was extreamly reasonable both in upkeep and initial cost. Fifthly, the printer's ability to install itself into my computer is just effortlessly done. Sixthly, the printer's ability to print text at SPEED has been pleasing indeed and when reproducing photos and such it is as well adept at this. In conclusion: I have been very satisfied with all aspects of this printer. It simply could not have been better! I hate ones who after owning a product for a few days picks the product apart with comments like, "well it would have been nice if there were a foot warmer or it could have been more well thought out in that when the packaging box was opened there should have been a chime that pleasantly comforted them as they proceeded. For those the bucket will always be "half empty instead of "half full".

So far, I'm quite thrilled with this printer. It is quiet, fast, and even with just the standard four-color cartrige (not the photo cartridge), photos print out great, even on plain paper.
I also printed about 80 pages of brown text set at about 10 pt in a serif font, and it was very crisp and very fast.
It is not a small printer: it has a fairly substantive footprint, but it looks nice and feels like quality construction. It set up on my Mac in a snap, which was great.
In short, if you are looking for a reasonably-priced, fast, quiet, quality inkjet, this is a great machine.

the only downside to this printer is that it does not have any font & font size option and the fact that you have to go to each single client's desktop to configure the 250 sheet tray (set the paper setting to go from either top to lower tray or vice versa) otherwise, it'll keep using the default tray and will not automatically use the other tray. besides that, printer works just fine.

I looked long and hard before I committed to a printer. I wanted something that printed things out fast and did a good job on photos. This unit does both, and very well I might ad.
I like the sleekness of lines, the solid appearance and the weight. This is NOT a small printer. It's moderate in size. Not tiny, but not a monster either. I suggest you take a look at its measurements, and where you plan to put it. That might be important to you.
Many out there are just too light and flimsy, and wobble when they print. Anyway, this thing is quiet, VERY FAST and is capable of using 6 ink colors for BORDERLESS photos. It takes all sized of paper, envelopes and this baby COMES WITH A DUPLEXER AND SECOND PAPER TRAY. WHAT A VALUE RIGHT THERE.
The Duplexer for my old Photosmart 1215 ran $80.00 alone.
Anyway, This thing will save you in paper. Two pages ( front and back) on one sheet automatically. Great for People who do brochures, greeting cards, multi page reports, recipes, newsletters, etc. Did I mention it's QUIET??? This thing is so fast if you dont extend the paper stop on the paper tray, it shoots out like a rocket. I'm using Windows XP Pro and it was a SNAP to install. No problems what so ever. Took all of 3 minutes. Just be sure the TWO SIDED DUPLEX PRINTING option is engaged under printer properties. THIS MACHINE ALSO TAKES 28 POUND PAPER. Not all do. If you use paper with a brightness of 113, the color is really crisp, sharp and clean. I load the upper tray with standard paper and the lower tray ( which you dont need to install if you dont want to) filled with glossy photo paper. Although this printer substantial, be sure you have it on a ROCK SOLID SURFACE and you wont be disappointed with the end product. This unit comes with a black 21ml size ink cartridge which is said to print out 800 sheets. The Tri color is 14ml and is said to print out 450 aheets. Usually printers are shipped with minimal ink.....not this baby. Cartridge #99 contains 13ml photo ink.(which is optional and NOT included) and is to be used with the Tri-Color if printing out BORDERLESS PHOTOS. The ONLY thing this DOESNT COME WITH is the USB 2 cord. I got one at WAl-Mart. DID I mention it's QUIET & FAST????
Men will love the unit for it's looks, speed and efficency. Women will love it for Duplexing and photo reproduction. It's a WIN- WIN situation in my book......and you cant beat the price AND Free shipping too!!! AMAZON.COM did it again. THANKS GUYS.

HP creates another excellent product

I've only had the 6540dt for a few days, but from what I've seen so far, HP continues to make the most solid, high quality inkjets on the market. Not only does it operate well, it's attractive and yet even looks well built metal plate front. It's fast, with very sharp print quality.
After over three years of owning the HP Deskjet 932C and being extremely happy with it, I was thrilled to see this new model up for sale at a very good price for all the included features.
If you're in the market for a new printer, give the 6540 a serious look.
