The Andy Williams Christmas Album

The Andy Williams Christmas Album

This was one of the best-selling Christmas records of the 1960s, and with good cause! Somehow, without the fatherly image of Bing Crosby, or the svelte croon of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, or even the reverent innocence of Perry Como, Andy Williams managed to make a holiday institution! This collection of Christmas songs is full of standards normally identified with other artists, but armed with an average tenor and lots of exuberance, Andy Williams made them his own. His "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" is the most exhilarating version of the song there is, and even his "White Christmas" and "O Holy Night" are more than just passable. This is not only Williams's best Christmas collection, this is one that should be in every holiday music collection. --Steve Gdula

I usually buy 5 or 6 Christmas albums per year. Sometimes its a new release, while other times it may be a collection from my youth. This year, I picked up records from Kristin Chenoweth, James Taylor, Randy Travis, Ray Conniff, Herb Alpert, and this one. This CD has been out for 4 years, and after listening to it, I'm mad that I waited this long to get it.

I thought it would be kitschy and kind of funny to play at Christmas this year. My dad had it back in the 60s and we played it hundreds of times in the 60s and 70s. And while it holds tons of nostalgia, this is a terrific record--and it holds its own with anything I've bought this year or in the past ten years.

Andy's voice is smooth and satiny, and the arrangements are refined. The remastering sounds great to me.

Happy Holidays/The Holiday Season is great; of course It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is an all-time classic. Really, you can put the whole thing on (it's just over 30 minutes) and not find a clunker.

Highly recommended. This record will stand with any in your collection.

Rolicking and Reverent

This is my absolute favorite Christmas album (followed closely by Robert Goulet's "This Christmas..."). Andy's voice is incomparable. The songs on the first side are a whole lot of fun, and the songs on the second side are sublimely beautiful. "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it--and I'm an atheist! My favorite is Andy's memorable version of the Twelve Days of Christmas, which I can only recall by starting on the twelfth day: "All their good wishes; gifts for one and all; some mistletoe; a guardian angel; gold and silver tinsel; candles a'glowing; little silver bells; a shining star; four colored lights; three boughs of holly; two candy canes...and a song for the Christmas Tree. If you need 12 good songs for your Christmas tree, here they are.

My favorite Christmas album of all time!

Simply the best! It's not Christmas for me until I've heard this CD. Superb arrangements, especially on "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells" and "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year." The medley of "Happy Holiday/It's the Holiday Season" will have you in the Christmas spirit in no time flat. Buy this album today.

Another great one by Williams

More great Christmas music to sing along to. Not quite as good as his green Merry Christmas album, but that is only because this wasn't one we listened to over and over when I was young.

Moving album

I grew up with this LP (I think I just dated myself). It was great then and even better now in the CD format! - Natasha
