Since I have my own bussiness, I'm really-really need fax copy scanner printer machine. The beauty and function this machine look promises.
But every year, it always stuck, broke, stopped. Brother's always send me new one because I bought warranty BUT....is wasting your time, wasting your jobs because the waitting for the product. Is terrible.....
Only works ounce a year.
So...my advise, don't bother buy it, if you do don't forget buy warranty, it's worth it.

Yikes! Stay away from this printer! rating: 1
Stay away from this printer. There are better options even within brother. The problems:
1)Drinks ink like an alcoholic.
2)Will not stay connected to the network and it is very difficult to reconnect.
3)Customer service's only advice was to shut the router, printer and computer down every time it disconnected.
4)Installed the firmware and software patches and as of 9/27/2008 this does not make a difference.
5)Try the 465CN instead as it has fairly good reviews.

420 "many faults concentrated" Brother not ever again!! rating: 1
A"friend" gave me a new Bother MFC420CN printer stating that it was such a waste he counldn't throw it away. I din't pay for it so I can throw it away and I will. I replaced all the print cartridges ($50 from Office Depot). The menu said low ink. Now it says "no cartridge". I re-set the cartridges, installed the old ones, and commenced a search for help with "ink" problems. I give up! After putting in many cleaning cycles still no red. After power up/power down, inputting secret codes in maintenance, reading the manual even it is clear that these units have fundemental design flaws. The ink wells seem to acumulate ink from changing cartidges. The print head in deep inside the machine and not accessible for cleaning. The opertion lcd read out is not back lite and hard to read. Ink is unbelieveably expensive. Once trapped in the low ink or no cartridge mode even new cartridges don't help. A good scanner it is. Never used the fax. USB connects itself and Win XP installed without trouble. Look for something with lower cost ink and less maintenance issues. A minus 1 in my book.

Ink Sucker rating: 1
Used it almost exclusively for scanning. Still had to replace the ink regularly. Now the black ink stopped printing all together. I won't buy another Brother.

Just barely adequate. Uses ink like crazy. rating: 2
When it works, it is ok, but it's not a "set it and forget it" device.
My biggest gripe is that it uses a lot of ink in a periodic self-cleaning cycle that apparently can't be turned off. I very rarely print anything anymore, but even so, I need to buy ink every couple of months as it wastes it all on self-cleaning cycles. If any of the cartridges are empty or missing, it won't let you do ANYTHING - including scan or outgoing fax - until the cartridge is replaced. I can't imagine what they were thinking with that design.
In conclusion, I'd sum up my experience with this unit in two words: never again.
