5 is for perfect ! rating: 4
I've been using the computer for almost a month now and to summarize my experience so far - LOVE IT. Let me start with the cons first. The outside of the lid IS and looks like plastic - a black plastic. Not a great "looks" feature. But open the lid and you see a beautiful bright 14 inch widescreen with a full-size keyboard - no cramping your fingers for space. And while you are examining the computer to look at its ports and stuff, you notice how light it is - just 5.2 lbs. Weight factor alone should put it in the 1500 price range.
The lid locks into place with metal latches, keeping it securely shut. The other contender i was looking at (Sony Vaio S260) does not have any mechanisms to keep the lid securely shut.
Dedicated buttons for volume and one of the cool features - dedicated button to turn on or off the wireless adapter. No need to click anything to disconnect from a network. Its a Centrino with ample RAM,a big 60GB disc and pretty nifty DVD-CD combo burner unit. The touchpad is something else i marvel at - it can be turned off at the press of a button, useful when typing so your fingers dont make the cursor roam all over the screen. AND it has dedicated vertical and horizontal scroll zones - a feature some of the pricier notebooks lack. The 3 USB ports are located on either side and far apart so that all three of them can be used simultaneously without getting in each other's way. There's a 5-in-1 media reader (for memory sticks etc) but it does not include the popular CompactFlash media.
Setup was easy. You do need the computer connected to a phone line (all the required cables and lines are included) at the time of the initial setup. After that, go totally wireless!! The wireless adapter works well enough across three rooms of my house without a hitch.
If you are into heavy graphics intensive applications or 3-d games etc, you might be disappointed. everything else, it can handle without a sweat.
Package includes a full version of windows XP home. the other software wasnt very impressive and i ended up tossing them into the storage box.
Battery life is not exceptional but its not bad either - i have been consistently getting about 2-2.5 hours with the wireless adapter on and screen at max brightness.
So far this computer has worked without any trouble of any sort and i have not had to call compaq (HP) tech support for anything. but since my desktop is a compaq as well, i know tech support is very good. i am hoping not to experience it for this computer though!
all in all, a very good computer. add the remarkable price - make that an excellent computer and a great buy!
