User Reviews
Great Series
rating: 5

I found this series to be very well done. Cadfael is one of my favorites. If you like a mystery that is not easily solved you will like these. The acting is excellent. Unlike some other reviews I found nothing wrong with the picture. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys British mysteries.

These are just beautifully done mysteries. Derek Jacobi plays Cadfael, a
Benedictine monk in England and Wales in the 12th century. Alot of great
guest stars and the murder mysteries themselves are cleverly done. Crime
detection done without modern science, but with observation and knowledge
of herbs, poisons and human nature. The scenery is great, the acting is
superb. I highly recommend these stories, all 75 minutes in length. A
great adaption of the original Ellis Peters books.

A DVD for All Seasons

The Brother Cadfael mystries were in my opinion one of the finer BBC book adeptations ever, so I did not hesitiate when the complete collection was available on DVD. I do have a post-production complaint however: Acorn saw fit to add Engish subtitles to an English script! It was not necessary, the accents are not that heavy. The subtitles only serve as a distration to a well produced series. There should have been a "hide" feature built in so those of us who didn't want the subtitles did not have to be stuck with them.

Great viewing

I remember watching this in the 90's. A really great series that does a reasonable job displaying 12th century England. As another reviewer posted, if you remember watching these when they are aired on PBS's Mystery, you will miss the 30 second introduction.
The video quality is not high. It was more enjoyable to watch on an older TV.

This is truly one of the best series I have EVER seen. The photography is wonderful, ell acted, and there is the true sense that these were REAL happenings. I even got my brother to watch it with me and he was truly enthralled too.
