The color of light can be balanced or specific colors can be added to a scene by using a Speedlight with the optional Colored Gel Filter Set SJ-1. The Colored Gel Filter Set SJ-1 contains a total of 20 filters in 8 kinds of colored gels: FL-G1 (for fluorescent light); FL-G2 (for fluorescent light); TN-A1 (for incandescent/tungsten light); TN-A2 (for incandescent/tungsten light); Blue; Yellow; Red; and Amber. The colored gel filters will fade or deteriorate with time. When this happens, replace them with the backup gels provided in the set.

This gel set is a great addition for my creative lighting system. I use it for my SB-600 along with my strobe lights to give models that creative look. I like the blue gels and I position them on my flash so that they slightly bounce off the model...Great item...

Great stuff. Havent used the new SJ-2 before so cant compare with that, but for the SB-800, this is extremely useful for creative lighting.

This gel set is of good quality, comes in a handy folder and are a great fun to use. There are basically two ways to apply these. The first is to get your flash to match the ambient light, and the second is to get creative and experimental. While the first is very useful, the second is great fun! Putting on gels and playing with the white balance setting can create some wonderful results.

Flters for Nikon SB-600 and SB-800 Flashes

What if you are using a strobe to take pics in a room illumitated by fluorescent or incandescent lights? The color of the subject lit up by the flash is fine, but the room color is wrong. Put the correct filter on your flash to correct this.
Or get artistic with the red and blue filters.
