From the author: Faience fragments with Egyptian hieroglyphs found at Mycenae between 1886 and 1969 are currently seen as Egyptian-made royal gifts from the time of Amenhotep III (1391-1353 B.C.). However, comparisons of objects from Egypt do not offer precise parallels, and limited scientific analyses of the Mycenae fragments support non-Egyptian manufacture. With function and manufacturing place of the fragments questioned, and the accessibility of all items for comparative study difficult, this article cautions against their casual use in theories of trade and gift exchange.
