The Wave radio II delivers deeper tones and crisper, more accurate audio performance than the original. The key to the improved sound is the new dual tapered waveguide technology, exclusively from Bose. Engineers re-sculpted the interior of the Wave radio II to accommodate not one, but two 26" folded waveguides. These dual waveguides amplify the low-frequency output, reproducing musical notes a full one-half octave lower than the original Wave radio. The result: Instruments like kettle drums and bass guitars have a more natural presence. With such accurate sound reproduction, you can appreciate more of the intricate nuances of many instruments, including the human voice. You may even hear details in music that you've never heard before. There's also a new equalization feature for talk radio. It automatically compensates for the artificially boosted low frequencies found in some talk radio programs so announcers sound more natural. The Wave radio II is simple to use. Instead of buttons on the unit, everything is conveniently controlled with a well-organized credit card-sized remote. And setup is easy too. The digital FM/AM tuner, amplifiers and speakers are all built into the unit. Just unpack it and plug it in to enjoy Bose quality sound. The display panel is large and bright, with big, bold text that's easier to read from across the room. It displays more information now too. Radio station, current time and alarm setting are all shown simultaneously. Sure it sounds nice, but why after spending $350 on a RADIO, to only include a flimsy remote controller the size of a credit card with no controls on the unit itself is a big miss. Right now, I've lost my remote, not hard to do since it's miniscule and I can use the radio. Problem, well my alarm is set, so it does go off at 6:45 am, but in order to turn it off, I need to get out of bed and unplug the unit.
All this for $350. I could have gone to radio shack to get one for $10...avoid..

For Bass Drum Lovers

The Bose engineers added 20db of amplifier boost between 20hz and 100hz. This extremely bass-heavy sound is popular these days. And the speakers and Wave technology can reproduce these low frequencies very well. But I'd rather hear something besides the bass and the bass drum. It's not so bad if you get back about twenty feet because the lows are attenuated by the air and distance. But up close, like on a nightstand next to the bed, the heavy bass and low rumbling will drive you berserk. Turning the talk radio setting to "on" for FM listening helps quite a bit. But they didn't include this feature when the radio is set to AUX, which is what I use for CD's and XM radio. The boosted low frequencies make music from these sources unlistenable. You can run the CD or XM signal through a separate mixer or equalizer to cut some of the lows. It's just too bad that Bose didn't include tone controls on a radio this expensive so the sound could be adjusted with a couple of knobs.

Overpriced

I received this as an anniversary gift. No dual alarms and no buzzer. You cannot select one audio level for drifting off to sleep without it being too low to wake you the next day. It's main value is in its' compactness. I'm dissapointed with it but at least it did not cost me anything. I would check out the csw systems. They appear to have more value

great sound but design (remote) lousy

I have had it a couple of years. The sound is great. However, what idiot decided to have no controls except by remote? And to make it worse the supplied remote is a JOKE. Its range on a good day is maybe 4 feet. Most of the time it won't work at all. Some buttons work some time. I leave it turned on in the AUX mode since that is the only way I use it anyway (nothing on the radio worth tuning in these days). Unfortunately if the power goes out, even for a split second, while it will retain the time, etc. it will NOT keep the unit ON. I have to fool around for several minutes hoping I can get the remote to work for a second or two so I can get it turned on and actually use it. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. HOW DO INSANE DESIGNS LIKE THIS GET RELEASED ON AN UNSUSPECTING PUBLIC? I know Bose is supposed to be a good company but they dropped the ball big time on this.

About the reception issue

While I have experienced some reception problems with the stock cord antenna, all I had to do is call Bose and I was connected with a customer service rep within seconds. He is sending me a FREE external antenna, so I really don't get all the hub-bub about having to pay $30 for it. I am extremely satisfied with the product and the great sound that comes from this small unit. I actually used it in a presentation at school (in a big room) and it was too loud. I love the easy set up and the intuitive controls on the remote. The only negative is the remote is the only way to control it, so if you lose it or the batteries run out you are out of luck. On the bright side you can get a remote for $10, so who that is not a big issue. Thanks Bose.
