User Reviews
Basically works
rating: 3

Works well enough. Software requires more than 100 megs for install, for some reason, and is very slow to load, and is apparently no longer supported. Video quality no more than adequate. I would recommend a Hauppauge PVR, which certainly has its own quirks, but they're *better* quirks.

Product works well for savvy users.
rating: 3

I've used this item for over a year and have learned to adjust it rather easily...but I have a degree in Computer Science. Diamond would do well to invest in sufficient tech support to provide average users enough hand holding to get good results from a rather decent product. A set of instructions for getting various levels of picture quality and software that updates itself like windows xp (on demand or otherwise) would bolster its product's goodwill. Everyone is not looking for computer adventures...they just want it to eventually work reliably and without too much interfacing.
Note this new box doesnot contain the standard Firefly remote as pictured, but rather the firefly MINI remote...somewhat inferior to the standard.

Prepare for frequent re-installs
rating: 2

I've had to reinstall the Beyond TV software almost every-day that I've used it. I don't dare turn off or unplug the Diamond USB unit as my laptop (Fujitsu S6000, a great laptop) will not recognize it once I re-plug it into the USB port. If I do, I have to re-install the software to get the USB unit to be recognized.
When it does work, the picture is fair. Very "blocky" (the picture is made up of little squares). I assume it's a resolution issue, but changing my computer's resolution doesn't help.
The documentation is bad. If you run into a problem, you're on your own, there's no FAQ to help you with common problems.

On the positive side- The software makes it easy to pre-record. The whole system can use up to 3 USB ports, but if you don't use the remote, you only need one powered USB port.

I'd recommend this product to only those who are comfortable with playing with re-installs and system restores. I find the product disappointing and woudn't buy it again.

4/3/06 OK, I've calmed down from the install process. Since then, this system has been pretty stable, I haven't had any crashes or re-installs. The "blockiness" is more my reception (I don't have cable, just an antenna hook up). When the receptions is strong, the picture is decent. The recording is a breeze with the Beyond Media Software. I would buy this product again, and I would, now, give it 3 stars (though the install was very stressful).

Save yourself the headache...
rating: 1

This unit worked well for about three months. All of a sudden it quit displaying video and I get no audio. Email tech support is a joke. No responses after 4 attempts. Phone support gave me a "we've never heard of that before". Yeah, right. Save yourself the headache and chose another video capture device and especially another manufacturer.

Mixed bag

WI purchased this because I had filled up the 4 PCI slots on my mini-ATX motherboard. What I didnt realize was that this unit requires 3 to 4 USB ports so a USB Hub is needed. Also to go with this you need a "Blaster" (about$60.00) which is not included. This changes the channel with your Satellite/Cable Box DVR unit. A 60-day trial of BeyondTV is included. This software is key using a DVR. So lets review: 20.00 for a USB hub, 60.00 for a blaster and 60.00 for the lifetime version of BeyondTV plus 130.00 for the unit. Its a little pricey for something that works moderately well.
