Felt like I was there...
rating: 4

I was provided with a copy of this book by the Aikens on my last trip to California. Excellent read. Action moved quickly and descriptions of old Cairo were very good. I felt like I was walking the streets with Gemma. The historical context kept the book interesting. What I thought was going to be a "Ladies book" type of read ended up keeping this guy reading late into the night. Great work Tucker!

Thought Provoking

Resurrection is to be savored.
Malarkey's writing is crisp, poetic and descriptive.
Her characters develop and mature while their intelligence grows.
I was totally fascinated with this look into the discovery of the gnostic gospels and learned a great deal, not only of history but of religion.
Although Catholic, I am now interested in learning more. When I finished Resurrection, I ran out to buy Elaine Pagels' book, The Gnostic Gospels, from which Tucker Malarkey draws.
Only one complaint: the language is so lyrical to be vague at times.
I am anxious to read her first novel, An Obvious Enchantment.

Not much action here
rating: 3

After reading many reviews here on Amazon, I am beginning to think I need to write a few of my own. I totally disagree with alot of these reviews. You can't go by the stars. Anyway, to keep things short, if you are looking for action and a book to keep your attention, skip this one. There is an interesting idea here but it doesn't live up to my expectations. The idea is a fictional account of what was going on around the time the lost gospels were found and how they would change to world as we know it and religion. That's the backdrop. The story is really about a woman who survived WW2 as a nurse in London and how she feels about the loss of her father. She tries to find out what he was doing at the time of his death. (He was searching for the lost gospels.) Along the way she runs into two half brothers that she kind of semi falls in love with. This book had its moments. I was really interested in the mystery of finding the lost gospels and what they had to say but really that was about 5-10% of the book. The rest was about how this woman felt about everything going on. Boring to me.

amazing read

I thought this book was an amazing read with such wonderful charachters.
The research was amazing and the author wrote a captivating story. English Patient meets The Davinci Code.

I could not put it down.

Riveting on more than one level
rating: 5

I won't describe the plot, as other reviewers have already done so. I just want to say that this is the book Dan Brown wishes he could have written. It's fascinating, insightful, and suspenseful without sounding like a B movie. The author's prose is stunning; you can actually feel the dust of the alleyways of Cairo, hear the call of the muezzin, and watch the hypnotic flow of the Nile.

But here is what is really amazing about this book: you can take the Nag Hammadi gospels and the mystery of Charles Bastian's death out of the book completely and you'd still have a compelling read. Because the book is also about the pain and the healing process of people after WWII. There are characters like Michael Lazar, who are not directly involved with finding the gospels, but is central to the story because he is a former pilot who is now crippled and is losing the battle to his inner demons. And Gemma, who was a nurse during the war, has to come face to face with her own pain and suffering and realizes she desperately needs to find a way to heal.

This is a multi-faceted, wonderful book and I highly recommend it to everyone.
