Back To The River

Back To The River

Back To The River is Susan Tedeschi's 2008 album, her second recording for Verve Forecast. Susan writes, sings and plays on a hard-driving collection of new songs that offer an emotionally honest look at love and life. Produced by George Drakoulias (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Crowes, Jayhawks) it also features performances by Derek Trucks (who also produced 1 track), Gary Louris and Doyle Bramhall II. Tedeschi's Verve Forecast debut, Hope and Desire, focused on her amazing vocal talents as an interpreter of other's songs. This time out she turns her pen, guitar and powerful voice to her own work having written or co-written all but one song.

Ms Tedeschi is possessed of great talents, but if this album is any indication, musical judgement and taste are not among them.

She has surrounded herself with people who, for the most part, are very good at playing notes, but don't have a clue about playing music. Every single track is overly serious and none of the swing.

Someone once said, "if it can't be done on 8 tracks, it's not worth doing." This album certainly supports that view!

Ms Tedeschi would be better served sparser arrangements and partners who can play the blues. Listening to Teddy Wilson's recording with Billie Holiday would be a good place for her to start.

If you love rockin' blues with a great guitar backing you're going to love this

I first heard Susan Tedeschi on "Austin City Limits." Her gritty voice and down to earth style are what got me looking for more of her recordings. People who say rock is dead haven't heard Susan playing.

She's written every song on this CD except for one cover instead of her previous release of all covers. Plus, she's got her husband Derek Trucks playing guitar and guest appearance singers like Tony Joe White (the Swamp Fox) on "Back to the River."

My favorites:

"Back to the River"
"Break in the Road"

Knockout disc from a knockout!

I've been a fan of Susan Tedeschi the moment I heard "It hurts so bad".Not only does she really showcase her vocal talents here, she also makes a step forward in songwriting.Very slick and tight arrangements,on each song, makes this a must listen to.Bluesy, rockin',jazzy, gospel too, a fine fine effort ,again, by an under-rated artist.I especially loved the cover of Allen Toussaint's "Theres a break in the road"and Susan on lead guitar.

It's growing on me

Susan is my favorite vocalist. At first listen, I thought it was a little guitar heavy...but I realized that was true on only a few songs.

The thing I loved about her first two albums were how simple they were... and her voice really stood out.

I love her slower tunes that really feature her beautiful and soulful voice. The songs 700 Houses and Revolutionize your soul are really good.

THE BEST YET

A terrific disc. Bluesy, hard rockin'and tender this really has it all. The first cut Talking About starts things off with a bang. The title cut is a piece of swamp rock heaven, co-written with swamp rock master Tony Joe White. Her killer band is equally at home with the hard rockers and ballads. As always with Ms. Tedeschi it's that voice, purring and growling or soft and moving she is a true wonder to behold. It doesn't get much better than this.
